Consumers vote with their feet

Salleh Said Keruak

There is a saying: consumers vote with their feet. In other words, if they are not getting a good deal they just walk away. Consumers should never allow themselves to becomes victims of blackmail and be put in a situation where they are compelled to buy from or patronise an establishment because they feel they are powerless and have no choice in the matter.

Consumer associations should be more active in this matter and should launch public campaigns to advise consumers on what they should do to ensure they always get the best deal. There should also be more laws passed concerning consumer protection such as in Europe where they have a 30-day return policy if you are not happy with what you bought or you found you can buy the same thing elsewhere much cheaper.

It is time consumers be empowered and not be victims of unfair trade practices. Consumers must not only know their rights but must be very cautious and selective before buying. The saying ‘let the buyer beware’ holds true here and the government cannot always solve problems through legislation if buyers themselves are careless and do not choose carefully before buying.
